The summer holidays have flown by so fast we barely had time to dry out our bathing suits. Already, it’s time to go back to the old routines but don’t worry as there is still a great deal to do with children in this wonderful area during the autumn months so make the most of our events listings for the month of September.

Remember to keep checking our blog on a general basis as we will be updating this post with more events each week. Happy rentrée to all !

  • Sunday 1st September 2013: “Les celtiques de Vivisco”, a unique Celtic festival in Vevey open from 9.30am until midnight. Discover more about Celtic life in the Vevey area and watch the amazing historical re-enactments: from music and dance to fighting and pottery making this makes for truly fascinating viewing for the whole family. Entry 5CHF per adult and free for children under 12.

  • Sunday 1st September 2013: Vogue de Carouge Festival at the Place de Sardaigne with live music, kids activities, face painting, dance and many more fun activities for the whole family.

  • If the weather isn’t too cold and the sun is still out, what about a scrumptious “brunch in the sun” with the family ?

  • Is it Sunday ? Is it raining again and you don’t know what to do with your energetic little monkeys ? Find some ideas and suggestions here or read our review of the new indoor playcentre in Annemasse C L’Aventure. In July and August they will be open everyday from 10am to 7pm.

  • Sunday 1st September 2013: “Et si le carré était partout…” Petits Rendez-vous at Geneva’s MAMCO for children aged 5 to 10 accompanied by an adult. These fun, interactive visits for kids are free of charge and require no advance booking. The tour starts at 11.15am. There will be other tours on Wednesday 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of September as well.

  • Until Sunday 1st Sept. 2013 & on Thursday 5th Sept.: “Animations Jeune Public” everyday at 3pm at the amphitheatre at Signal de Bougy (Parc Pré Vert). The shows are free of charge and take place outside so they will be cancelled in case of rain or bad weather. This week’s show is “Jour de Rêve” , a show with giant puppets.

 

  • Until 1st Sept. 2013: Festival Chouette Nature in Lacconex (Geneva), this is the first edition of a new family festival focused on nature and sports. For ages 3 to 15, the festival will offer plenty of workshops and activities for all including very young children in the dedicated area “Les Bouts-de-Chou”. Delicious Genevan specialities and local produce will also be available from the festival’s market. Free entry, see the official website for further details.

  • Wednesday 4th September 2013: Mini & Petits Rendez-vous  at Geneva’s MAMCO for little ones aged 2 to 4 (Mini rendez-vous) and 5 to 10 (Petits rendez-vous) accompanied by an adult. These fun, interactive visits for kids are free of charge and require no advance booking. Introduce your little ones to the joys of modern art with these great guided tours, which start at 3.15pm. There will be other tours on Wednesday 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of September as well.

  • 4th-8th Sept. 2013: Geneva Yoga Music Festival a great event for all yoga lovers, pooling together an exciting blend of music, yoga, massage and other treats from a wide range of local and international yogis, therapists & musicians. The festival will take place across 5 different locations, all within walking distance from each other (Soluna, 18 Rue du Môle; Temple des Pâquis, 49 Rue de Berne; Maison de Quartier des Pâquis, 50 Rue de Berne; AVieVa, 21Bis Rue de la Navigation; Insens, 12 Rue Ami-Lullin). Click here for full programme details and to book your tickets.   • 4th-8th Sept. 2013: Caminando & Avlando by the Ubus théâtre company, part of La Bâtie festival in Geneva – from age 9. Aboard an authentic Canadian school bus, young and old embark on a journey that takes in the great events of the 20th century. The story is told with paper puppets, video images and all sorts of bits and bobs. The bus will stop at:  l’Ecole des Ranches (Vernier) on Wed. 4th at 3pm and 5pm; la Maison de quartier du Plateau (Lancy) on Thurs. 5th at 3pm and 5pm; l’Ecole Robert-Hainard (Bernex) on Fri. 6th at 5pm and 7pm; Place Favre (Chêne-Bourg) on Sat. 7th at 4pm and 6pm; Centre sportif du Grand-Donzel (Veyrier) on Sun. 8th of Sept. at 11am and 3pm.

  • Thursday 5th September 2013: “Jeûne genevois” is a bank holiday in Geneva so schools, offices and shops will be closed. If you don’t have any plans yet, what about enjoying a delicious brunch at the Ferme de Merlinge from 9am to 1pm ? Made with fresh local produce, this is one of the best family brunches in the region – I can assure you the homemade bread, jams, pastries and Müesli are fantastic !   • 6th-8th September 2013: “Le livre sur le quai” book festival in Morges (VD) will offer a programme jam-packed with great authors like Amélie Nothomb and Pierre-Yves Tinguely, kids activities and a dedicated section for English-speaking writers. Highlights amongst the Anglophone authors include John Boyne (“The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”); Carmen Bugan (“Burying the typewriter”); Stephen Clarke (“A Year in the Merde”) and Francesca Segal (“The Innocents”).   • 7th-8th Sept. 2013:  Journées européennes du patrimoine 2013: feu et lumière in Geneva, with plenty of activities for everyone: guided tours of the city on the theme of “Feu et lumière” and special fun workshops for families at the Musée d’histoire des sciences or at the “Caserne des pompiers” on rue des Bains.   • 7th-8th Sept. 2013: Festiclowns Festival at Signal de Bougy (Parc Pré Vert) in favour of the charity “Le pas”.   • Sunday 8th September 2013: “Le Château des Jeux”, a fantastic FREE family event at the Musée Suisse du Jeu in La Tour-de-Peilz (VD). From 10am to 6pm discover this great games museum, its gardens and enjoy all the fab activities that will be taking place throughout the day – including the Swiss Flipper Tour 2013 !   • Sunday 8th September 2013: “Tim & Puma Mimi” music show from age 5, part of La Bâtie festival in Geneva. Reserve your tickets for 4pm at the Lieu Central (Maison Communale de Plainpalais). A multi-coloured universe full of playful melodies and childish songs that the Swiss and Japanese duo performs as a late afternoon snack. Full of bubbly electro-pop songs, their show promises to be both frenzied and mischievous!

  • Wednesday 11th September 2013: Atelier pop’up (in French) with artist Marfa Indoukaeva Berset for children aged 8 to 10 at the Bibliothèque des Minoteries in Geneva (Parc des Minoteries 3-5).   • Until 12th of September 2013: Les Tables longues – Lausanne Night Market, an absolute treat for all foodies out there.   • 12th-22nd September 2013: La Semaine du Goût opens its doors across Switzerland to delight our tastebuds with plenty of delicious events focused on food, healthy eating and regional specialties. The number of events and workshops is amazing and too big to list here, so take a peek at their official website to find what’s going on in the area closer to you. Child-friendly activities include workshops and cookery courses at Un R de Famille in Geneva and the goûter au jardin sospendu at the Librairie-café littéraire (rue de Carouge 98). In canton Vaud, don’t miss the workshops “Atout fraise” at the Alimentarium, or the “Déjeuner sur l’herbe et marché à l’ancienne” at Prangins Castle on Sunday 22nd of September (read more about last year’s picnic here).

  • Saturday 14th September 2013: La Fête de la Noix au Moulin & Huilerie in Sévery, near Morges (VD). The Moulin-huilerie de Sévery has been run for six generations by the Bovey family and walnut oil represents over 60% of the mill’s production. The 11th edition of this delectable festival will pull all the gourmet stops with a live cookery demonstration by Michelin-starred chef Benoît Violier from the legendary restaurant Hôtel de Ville in Crissier, a dégustation of different varieties of walnuts and a large buffet du terroir of exquisite dishes and local delicacies – all to be enjoyed to the sound of a live jazz band. The children will love to watch how the walnuts are pressed to make oil and take part in other fun activities for kids.   • Saturday 14th Sept. 2013: Family Factory, a fun introduction to contemporary art for children aged 3 and older accompanied by an adult at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève (10, rue des Vieux-Grenadiers). The current exhibition is dedicated to British artist PABLO BRONSTEIN, and the workshop will focus on designing your dream house. Sessions available are Saturday 14th, 21st and 28th of September; Saturday 5th, 12th & 19th of October; Saturday 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd of November 2013.   • Until 14th of September 2013: Plateforme en Musique – Pont de la Machine, a fantastic initiative organized by the city of Geneva: the Pont de la Machine will hold live free concerts covering various music genres such as rock, calypso and reggae. Every Saturday afternoon a special “terrasse de la musique” with seating and umbrellas will be put up on the pont de la machine from 2pm to 8pm, offering a dedicated space where locals and tourists alike will be able to enjoy free live music and amazing city views whilst sipping a much-needed cold drink !

  • 14th-15th September 2013: Fête des vendanges in Russins (Geneva). One of the area’s most famous autumn festivals now in its 50th year, celebrating grape-harvest season with exciting activities for the whole family: from pony rides for the little ones to free tastings of local wines for mum & dad.   • 14th-15th September 2013: Medieval music at Chillon Castle, a unique music event which will make your visit to Switzerland’s most famous castle even more picturesque and unforgettable. Medieval dances, ballads and juggling will take you back in time. From 10am to 6pm, free entry.

  • Sunday 15th September 2013: Les “Contes à reBourg” in Lausanne begin their second season with a fun storytime for children. Doors open at 4 pm and story-time begins at 4.30pm. A fun writing workshop and a free snack will follow. Prices: 5.- /children, 10.-/ adults and 30.- for a family ticket (3 children & 2 adults). Place: Le Café Théâtre le Bourg, Lausanne.

  • 17th September 2013: new theatre courses in French for children begin this week at Le Petit Carrousel in Gland (VD). Courses available are: ages 5-7 ans (45 minutes) on Mondays from 15h45 to 16h30 (salle rue de Mauverney 16A); ages 8-10 (1h) on Tuesdays from 15h45 to 16h30 (salle de la paroisse); ages 10+ on Mondays from 16h45 to 18h00 (salle rue de Mauverney 16A). The courses are very reasonably priced at 50CHF per month for ages 5-7; 60CHF for ages 8-10 and 70CHF per month for ages 10+.

 

  • Wednesday 18th September 2013: “Little Black Movie September sessions”, a selection of delightful short cartoons for children at the Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva (16, rue du Général Dufour), starting at 3pm. Let yourself be led on a voyage of discovery from Russia to China via Iran and Latvia, this will be a cinematic & truly magical experience for all ages. Ticket prices 5CHF up to the age of 10.

 

  • Wednesday 18th September 2013:  “Rencontre avec l’art contemporain” at La Julienne in Plan-les-ouates. A contemporary pottery exhibition by Caruge artists Elsa Alayse, Claire Curneen et Olivier de Sagazan. There will be a free story-time session and snack for children at 2.30pm and an apéritif at 7.30pm. Free entry, La Mansarde (second floor).

  • Wednesday 18th September 2013: “Mercredis des sciences” for children aged 8 to 11 at the Musée d’histoire des sciences, Genève. These fun scientific workshops are free of charge but places must be reserved in advance at 022 418 50 60 or mhs@ville-ge.ch, all sessions are in French and take place from 2pm to 4.30pm. The session on the 18th of September is called “Cartographier, mesurer: on ne perd pas le Nord!” and is perfect for wannabe explorers !

  • Wednesday 18th September 2013: Mercredis Family at the Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva (Rue Charles-Galland 2). Children aged 6 and older accompanied by an adult are welcome every Wednesday at 3pm to discover all about the museum collections in a fun, interactive way. Reserve your places in advance at adp-mah@ville-ge.ch or by phone at 022 418 25 00. On Wednesdays afternoon you can also take part in the museum’s “Visites-ateliers: Initiation à l’histoire de l’art” (ages 6-8 and 9-12). This is a cycle of 5 tours unveiling the most fascinating secrets of art history, each visit is followed by a creative workshop. On Wednesdays from 2pm to 6pm, 10CHF each session (places must be booked in advance).

  • 19th-22nd September 2013: “La Bosse du Théâtre”, a fun puppetshow from age 7 about Polichinelle at the Théâtre des Marionnettes de Genève (Rue Rodo 3). Performance times are 7pm Thursday to Saturday and 11am on Sunday. See the theatre’s official website to buy your tickets.

 

  • 19th-29th September 2013: Festival Colombia at the Grottes neighbourhood in Geneva. Delve deep into the rich culture of the Columbian community in Geneva – see the festival’s facebook event page for more details on their upcoming concerts, theatre & dance shows.

  • 20th Sept.-12th January 2014: «Toutankhamon – son tombeau et ses trésors», a fascinating exhibition which reconstructs the tomb and funerary treasure of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun, as it would have appeared to the eyes of Howard Carter, the British archaeologist who discovered it in 1922. See the exhibition’s official website for full details. At Geneva Palexpo Halle 7, open everyday from 10am to 7pm. Entry tickets are on special offer on Mondays at 16CHF per person.

  • 28th September 2013: don’t miss this year’s Désalpe de St-Cergue, the Alpine cattle descent in St-Cergue (VD). This one of Switzerland’s most famous traditional festivals and makes a fantastic day out for the whole family. To the drone of alphorns, the crack of whips, the beat of folk music and the dexterity of flag throwers, herdsmen and their cows return to the village for the winter from their summer in the alpine meadows. A small but fascinating insight into how the collections of the museum are preserved and studied – your little ones will love watching the butterflies and insects up close !   • until 2nd March 2014:Palmes & Co. exposition-promenade” at the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques in Geneva, one of Switzerland’s most important collection of palm trees. Close your eyes and pretend summer is still here as you stroll through the Botanical Garden’s beautiful lawns and spot all the different varieties of palm trees. The Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques are a great place for families, so make sure you make the most of their small zoo and fantastic playground.
